Pride Book Month Club
Wednesday, June 15th at 7pm - Virtual

June is LGBTQ Pride Month! We invite you to join our discussion of the book  The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo over Zoom.  Reclusive Hollywood icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant to write her story, no one is more astounded than Monique herself.

Determined to use this opportunity to jump-start her career, Monique listens in fascination. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to leaving show business in the ‘80s--and, of course, the seven husbands along the way--Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. But as Evelyn’s story nears its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways. Written with Reid’s signature talent for creating “complex, likable characters”, this is a mesmerizing journey through the splendor of Old Hollywood into the sobering realities of the present day struggle of facing the truth.

Nonfiction Book Club
Thursday, June 16th at 1pm - Main Library/Hybrid

In this stunning book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers" - the best and the brightest, the most famous, and the most successful. He asks the question: What makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: That is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band.

Juneteenth Celebration
Saturday, June 18th at 1pm - Main Library
Rain date is Saturday, June 25th at 1pm - Main Library

The library is proud to be hosting Long Branch's Inaugural Juneteenth Celebration! At 1pm on Saturday, June 18th, please join us for this festive event that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States.

In 1863, during the American Civil War, Pres. Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared more than three million slaves living in the Confederate states to be free. More than two years would pass, however, before the news reached African Americans living in Texas. It was not until Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, that the state’s residents finally learned that slavery had been abolished. The former slaves immediately began to celebrate with prayer, feasting, song, and dance.

During this event, you can expect the following:

  •   Food vendors
  •   Guest speakers
  •   Genealogy Research
  •   DJ performance
  •   Local author presence
  •   Bouncy house
  •   Entertainment
  •   Local businesses selling wares such as clothing, jewelry, accessories and more
