Nonfiction Book Club - Lab Girl by Hope Jahren

Thursday, November 16th at 1:30pm - Elberon Branch Library

Join librarian Janet Birckhead at the Elberon Branch Library for a lively discussion of the book Lab Girl by Hope Jahren.

"An illuminating debut memoir of a woman in science; a moving portrait of a longtime collaboration, in work and in life; and a stunningly fresh look at plants that will forever change how you see and think about the natural world.  Acclaimed scientist Hope Jahren has built three laboratories in which she's studied trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. Her first book might have been a revelatory treatise on plant life. Lab Girl is that, but it is also so much more. Because in it, Jahren also shares with us her inspiring life story, in prose that takes  your breath away. "

Needle Felting For Your Old Knits

Tuesday, November 28th at 6pm - Elberon Branch Library

Are you looking for inexpensive ways to liven up your winter outdoor gear? Don't go out and buy new items! Instead, get creative with what you already have and start upcycling your closet to create one of a kind signature garments. Bring in your old wool knit hat or scarf, and learn the basics of needle felting design.

What is needle felting? Needle felting is a fiber art process that transforms wool fibers into firm shapes using a specialized needle and foam block to lock the wool fibers together. Needle felting tools and materials will be provided.

Just bring your wool garments! Space is limited to 15 people, so use the button below to register.

Christy E. O'Connor, mixed-media artist, will lead the workshop.

Library Staff Book Club: There There by Tommy Orange

Thursday, November 30th at 2pm - Elberon Branch

Join Michelle Servellon at the Elberon Branch Library for a discussion of the book There There by Tommy Orange.

Tommy Orange's There There is the story of 12 unforgettable characters, Urban Indians living in Oakland, California, who converge and collide on one fateful day. It is a wonderous and shattering portrait of an America few of us have ever seen. It's "masterful...white-hot...devastating" (The Washington Post) at the same time as it is fierce, funny, suspenseful, thoroughly modern, and impossible to pause. Here is a voice we have never heard- a voice full of poetry and rage, exploding onto the page with urgency and force.

Contact Lisa Kelly at lkelly@longbranchlib.org if you have any questions.
