When it comes to pop culture, Hanukkah often gets overlooked as the setting for many books and movies. Maybe that’s because it’s often overshadowed by Christmas, or maybe it’s because Hanukkah is not one of the most important of the Jewish holidays.
But with Hanukkah starting on Sunday, December 18, we felt it was important to recognize the event and provide our patrons with a list of books they can read over the holiday. So while the majority of these books don’t connect with Hanukkah directly, their dedication to Judaism and Jewish representation.
What we’ve gathered is a mixture of different genres—from YA to historical fiction—but they are all written by prominent Jewish authors or feature Jewish leads. Some of them draw on symbols from Jewish lore while others deal with heavier topics, like systemic antisemitism.
In the end, we hope you enjoy these books. We at the Edison Public Library wish your family peace and light this holiday season.
