It’s hard to deny the contributions of women to the rock and roll genre. Artists like Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, and Stevie Nicks have inspired countless artists and left their mark on the music world. This was a huge undertaking in an industry that has historically been dominated by men. That’s why January 3rd is dedicated to those women pioneers on what is affectionately called Women Rock! Day.

Why January 3?

Despite not being the first woman in rock and roll, it was on January 3, 1987 that Aretha Franklin was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Since then, January 3 has been set aside as the day to commemorate her and all other women in rock and roll who helped shape the musical genre and redefined the industry.

The purpose of Women Rock! Day is to bring awareness to the women who fought for their place in the industry and encourage the girls and young women who aspire to be great musicians of their own.

Below, you’ll find a collection of books from the Edison Public Library by or about these gifted women. You can read all about their journeys navigating the music industry and their influences and inspirations.
