Visit us at the Main Library on Saturday, January 14 at 3:30pm to watch a stunning performance of traditional Chinese music. The set will consist of 8 separate works and include a zheng solo from the renowned musician Wang Junling.

Originating in the second century BCE, the zheng is a stringed musical instrument measuring more than 5 feet in length. It typically has anywhere from 21 to 26 strings and is played by plucking, like a mandolin or a sitar. Zhengs are often highly decorated and can be painted, carved, or include inlays of precious materials like mother of pearl.

Wang Junling is one of the most prolific zheng players in the country, having learned how to play the instrument from her father. She later continued her education at Henan University and performed as a soloist with the Henan Song and Dance Ensemble. She is founder of the Junling Zheng Music School in Flushing, NY and engages in frequent performances in and outside the Chinese community in the U.S. and Europe.
