Cryptozoology is the study of animals or creatures that are believed to exist but whose existence cannot be substantiated. These mythical creatures—called cryptids by those who believe in the practice—include Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and even our state’s very own Jersey Devil. But very few mythical creatures are as ubiquitous as mermaids, so much so that they even get their own day.
March 29 is Mermaid Day, a celebration of the creatures that have captivated human imagination for centuries and is an opportunity to embrace the magic and mystery of the ocean. Many people also take the opportunity to learn more about marine conservation efforts and the importance of protecting the ocean and its inhabitants.
In observance of the day, we’ve compiled a list of books about mermaids available through the Edison Public Library.
Whether you're a mermaid enthusiast or simply looking for an excuse to celebrate the wonders of the sea, Mermaid Day is a fun and festive occasion to enjoy.
