June is Pride Month, the time of year to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and the advancements they’ve made in terms of civil rights and acceptance. One of the defining moments in Pride history is the Stonewall Uprising, a violent clash between the gay community and the New York City police that occured outside the Stonewall Inn in 1969. The event sparked multiple nights of protesting, which led to groups in other cities to organize and fight for their right to live openly without fear of arrest–or worse.
To commemorate the event, the Edison Public Library has invited Robert Kesten, Executive Director of the Stonewall National Museum Archives & Library, to speak about the events that happened at the Stonewall Inn and delve into the impact it had on the LGBTQ+ community. Mr. Kesten will also discuss issues pertaining to LGBTQ+ advocacy in general.
This program will be held on Zoom on Thursday, June 15 at 7:00 pm. You can sign up at the link below.
