“History is written by the winners” is a phrase used to bring to light the secrets that tend to be kept quiet. That could be said about our own quaint little state of New Jersey. Despite being a Union state and fighting for the end of slavery in the Civil War, New Jersey still has its own dark past when it comes to enslaved people.
On Monday, June 19 at 7:00pm, Timothy Hack, the Chair of History and Social Sciences at Middlesex County College, will be at the Main Library to discuss the Secret History of Slavery in New Jersey. This program will delve into the development of slavery in the Garden State in the early days of the Union, and discuss the “slaviers” that existed in the state through 1804.
