Every September, libraries across the country celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month, a nationwide campaign from the American Library Association (ALA) to remind the community, most especially parents and students, that signing up for a library card is the first step to lifelong learning academic achievement. This annual initiative underscores the importance of libraries as essential community hubs that provide access to resources, information, and experiences that enrich lives.
Modern libraries offer more than just books. Many host free programs aimed at enriching the lives of patrons and sparking creativity and a thirst for knowledge. Many also provide access to digital products and services like eBooks, Audiobooks, movie and music streaming, online courses, education workshops, and research databases.
“Many people associate libraries with just books, movies, and music,” says Library Director Allan Kleiman. “But we are so much more! Libraries also offer free S.T.E.A.M. workshops, bilingual storytimes, live music, art receptions, community outreach, office support—such as copiers, faxes, scanning, and software that may be too expensive to purchase on your own—career assistance, and homework help. We offer you a safe space to grow and continue learning through programs like our Teen Advisory Board and lively book clubs. We are the heart of many communities and the cherry on top is that your library membership is both renewable and sustainable for the environment!"
For children, a library card signifies the first step toward becoming lifelong learners and plays a crucial role in their education and development by giving them the tools to succeed in the classroom. For adults, a library card offers opportunities for professional development, recreational reading, and access to tools that can empower them to explore new passions and interests.
Library Card Sign-Up Month is a celebration of knowledge, community, and the transformative power of libraries. By spreading the word through creative and engaging methods, libraries can continue to be dynamic spaces that inspire people to explore, learn, and connect. In pursuit of this, the Edison Public Library, along with libraries everywhere, continues to adapt and expand services to meet evolving community needs.

You can also stop in to any of our three branches and speak with any of our friendly librarians. If you already have a library card, encourage your friends and family to get one too! Educate them on all of the services available to them that are free of charge with a library card.
