It’s December! A chill is in the air and everyone is busy gearing up for the holiday season. Despite all of that, there’s still some great activities happening at the Edison Public Library.
December is Learn A Foreign Language Month, and Edison Public Library patrons have access to tools to help them do exactly that. Pronunciator is a free service offered through the Library that will teach anyone how to speak another language through easy to follow modules and courses. To get started with Pronunciator, head over to the Databases section on our website and set up your account.
As usual, December is chock full of events for the young ones, like out Baby Songs and Stories and Toddler Storytimes. We’re also doing special story times at the Menlo Park Mall on December 5, 12, and 19, so be sure to join us there!
The young ones will also have a blast at Alphabet Soup where they will learn their A-B-Cs through a phonics-based program to introduce our earliest readers to the alphabet through individual letters or letter blends to help cultivate a love of reading and learning.
We’ve got some new programs for bigger kids too! Our newest art programs include Popsicle Snowflakes and Swirly Glue and Glittery Snowmen—both of which are aimed at children ages 6-11— and Imagination Station, which is open to ages 7-11.
The Main Library will be hosting two Sunday musical events. The first features Raga Jazz with Charu Suri Trio and will tread fearlessly between genres, pulling global influences that range from the mood-anchoring Indian ragas, Sufi music, to the trio. The second will showcase the music of Pyrenesia, an acoustic swing quartet combining original compositions and singer-songwriter melodies with the Django Reinhardt-inspired tradition of gypsy jazz.
We have a pair of programs for our older patrons with their eye on retirement. The first sees the experts from AARP providing tips and practical strategies to help you achieve retirement peace of mind while the second—Social Security: Understanding your Benefits—will help you navigate the minefield of social security benefits. Both of these programs will be held at the North Edison Branch.
We know the holidays can be stressful so we’re holding two mindful meditation programs this month. Our friends from the Edison chapter of the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual Organization return to host Guided Meditation: Overcoming Self-Doubt at the Clara Barton Branch while Reducing Stress Through Meditation this Holiday Season is a virtual session led by long time meditation practitioner Umesh Bhatia.
We’ll be closing out the month with a visit from Steve Woyce and his Winter Wonderland Magic. Mr. Woyce will be appearing at all three Library branches to perform an enchanting magic show featuring all the things that we love about winter from penguins to snowmen. This program is sure to be a hit, so make sure to register early to guarantee your spot.
All of this and more is in addition to our regular book clubs, Makerspace programs, and the Clara Barton Knitting Circle.
You can see a full list of all of December’s events here, and don’t forget to register on the Events page of our website.
