On Saturday, January 27, Oleana Whispering Dove, Keeper of Cultural Lifeways for the Ramapo-Munsee Heritage Gallery, will be coming to the Main Library to provide an oral historical account and cultural interpretation of the Indigenous Nations within the Tri-state region.
Oleana will discuss how the landscape and community life changed from 1654 to present day in the area known to Natives as Turtle Island—what we currently call the Tri-state. She will point out the differences, if any, between Eastern and Western tribes and talk about the origins of the word Lenape.
This educational program will enlighten attendees to the history of the area they call home and bridge the gap between how locals see this land and the way Natives perceive it.
