The practice of slavery is truly one of the darkest spots in the history of America. Not only did it create an environment in which a race of people was imprisoned and segregated, forced to work against their will for no wages and under harsh treatment, but it also created a lasting legacy of racism and oppression, the effects of which are still felt to this day.

The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, recognized annually on March 25, stands as a tribute to the millions who suffered under the crushing oppression of slavery. It is a reminder of the atrocities committed in the pursuit of wealth and the enduring segregation of people based on skin color and culture.

Today, we invite you to reflect on the profound impact of slavery on individuals, families, and society. Below, we’ve collected a selection of books available at the Edison Public Library that delve into the history and brutality of slavery and recognize just how it shaped us as a country.
