For more than 50 years, Mental Health America has proclaimed May as Mental Health Awareness Month in an effort to educate the public about mental illness, raise awareness surrounding research and treatments, reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, and celebrate recovery from mental illness.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being and is an essential component of overall health; poor mental health can impact one’s daily life, relationships, social life, employment, and finances resulting in challenges that lead to larger issues such as substance misuse, isolation, poor physical health, homelessness, and even suicide.

Today more than one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness, and we’re only just starting to break up with the taboo on mental health. Greater awareness, along with access to information on mental health, plays an important role in one’s hope and recovery and can significantly help to reduce stigmas. The Edison Public Library’s collection features both fiction and non-fiction books on treatment and recovery, strength and resilience.
