June is Pride Month, a month-long observance that serves to not only celebrate the accomplishments of lesbian, gay, transgender, and queer (LBGTQ+) individuals but also recognize the LBGTQ+ community and their ongoing struggle for acceptance and equality.
One of the defining moments in Pride history was the Stonewall Uprising, a violent clash between the gay community and the New York City police that occurred in June 1969 at Greenwich Village’s Stonewall Inn. The event sparked multiple nights of violent confrontations and protests that extended beyond Manhattan as groups in other cities joined together in what would be later referred to as a ‘galvanizing force for LGBT political activism.’
Patrons are also invited to join us on Sunday, June 16 as we celebrate Pride with a special performance from the New Jersey Gay Men’s Chorus, an inclusive volunteer chorus drawing from communities in New Jersey and surrounding areas, set to take place at the Main Library at 2:00pm. The performance will feature a selection of well-known tunes and classic favorites along with some new songs commemorating Pride and the Chorus’ upcoming trip to perform at the GALA Festival in Minneapolis.
Registration for the New Jersey Gay Men’s Chorus, which opened June 3, is suggested but not required.
