Celebrate Afro-Peruvian music and its main instrument, the cajón (box drum) at a hands-on program and performance featuring musician Hector Morales taking place at the Main Library on Sunday, October 6 at 2:00pm.
Morales, a Peruvian drummer and percussionist with combined national and international performance experience, will introduce the audience to this unique tradition and perform some of its typical styles, including festejo, lando, and zamacueca. Participants will have the opportunity to play the cajón and other percussion instruments, such as the cajita (little box) and the quijada (donkey jawbone), as well as a chance to learn to sing popular songs of the Afro-Peruvian repertoire.
The 2015 Young Audiences NJEP ‘Artist of The Year,’ Morales co-teaches a performing and teaching world music course at William Paterson University and also leads The Afro-Peruvian Ensemble, an All-Star group of master Afro-Peruvian musicians from the United States. Additionally, he performs with New York City-based Afro-Peruvian jazz ensembles and serves as a grant panelist for local and state art councils.
Open to teens (age 14) through adult. Registration is not required but suggested as space is limited.
