Join Sean Gaskell on Tuesday, November 5, when the Edison Public Library presents Music of the West African Kora.
During the 6:30 pm event, which will take place at the North Edison Branch, Gaskell will present songs on the kora—a 21-stringed West African harp—and provide information on its history, how it is built, who typically plays it, and more.
The kora is traditionally played by oral historians known as Griots. Many songs featured on the kora preserve an 800-year history dating back to the founding of the Mande empire. Gaskell, who studied in West Africa under Moriba Kuyateh and the late Malamini Jobarteh in Gambia as well as both Youssoupha Cissokho and Mamadou Cissokho in Senegal, will also share some personal experiences about his time there and being hosted by the family of his teachers
Open to adults and children ages 10 and older. Registration is not required but space is limited to 45 seats with attendance on a first-come, first-served basis.
