National Learn a Foreign Language Month, which is celebrated in December, is intended to encourage individuals to embrace the advantages of language learning, facilitating cultural appreciation, cognitive enrichment, and personal and professional development.

Knowledge of another language can lead to cultural enrichment, enhanced cognitive abilities, and increased professional opportunities. Additionally, multilingualism has been proven to bridge cultural divides and improve personal travel experiences and professional interactions while also helping to develop stronger international friendships.

Learning a new language requires consistent practice and Edison Public Library cardholders can do just that with Pronunciator, a free language-learning application that offers lessons in over 160 languages—including English and American Sign Language—to help you increase your fluency in almost any dialect.

Pronunicator will walk you step-by-step to teach you common vocabulary words and proper verb conjugation through a variety of visual aids and repetition. Additionally, Pronunciator’s learning process includes:
  • Daily Lessons and Quizzes
Whether you’re a beginner or more advanced, Pronunciator will teach you based on your knowledge level
  • Personalized courses
You can personalize the words Pronunciator teaches you through your interests or occupation to help communicate with a purpose
  • “Word on the Street”
Pronunciator will teach you terms and phrases based on objects and imagery found in regular, everyday photos.

You can access Pronunciator from the Databases area of EdisonPublicLibrary.org. Simply create an account, select the language you want to learn, and begin the journey to becoming multilingual.
