In 1939, the M.S. St. Louis carried 937 Jewish refugees out of Germany on a course set for Havana, Cuba where they would be free from Nazi persecution. But when they arrived, they were denied entry first by the Cuban government and then by the United States and Canadian governments, before being finally dispersed throughout Europe, where a quarter of them would perish in the Holocaust.
Eva R. Wiener made that ill-fated voyage when she was just 10 months old, and on Monday, May 12, she will share her family’s story during an in-person event taking place at the Main Library.
Celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month and join Wiener at 6:00pm for a discussion about her life after the war and the importance of educating the next generation on the perils of the Holocaust and the urgency of stemming the tide of hate, bigotry, prejudice, and antisemitism. Audience questions are welcome.
