A desire to visit something new triggers an expedition to identify a wreck and reveal a tragic hit-and-run at sea. Shipwreck driver Dan Lieb's talk on the John K. Shaw, taking place at the Clara Barton Branch on Monday, June 9, is a compelling look at a maritime disaster.
During this 6:00pm presentation, Lieb will share details about the John K. Shaw, a 158-foot, 379-ton, 3-masted schooner that is believed to have been involved in a maritime ‘hit and run’ and was sunk by a vessel that fled the scene after a terrible collision. The schooner was built locally, owned locally, and crewed locally, with the tragedy off the Woodlands on the New Jersey coast resulting in the loss of its entire crew of local men in February 1884.
Lieb’s enthusiasm for local maritime history allows him to identify shipwrecks in New Jersey waters. He holds a PADI Divemaster rating and has logged over 2,300 dives since 1974. Additionally, Lieb has led and participated in dozens of archaeological expeditions in New Jersey and the surrounding region for more than 30 years mapping shipwrecks.
