June is Pride Month, a month-long observance that serves to not only celebrate the accomplishments of lesbian, gay, transgender, and queer (LBGTQ+) individuals but also recognize the LBGTQ+ community and their ongoing struggle for acceptance and equality.
Edison Public Library invites patrons to visit the Main Library on the evening of Monday, June 16, for a screening of Pride. The 2014 film is centered around a group of gay and lesbian activists in the U.K. who, during the summer of 1984, set out to raise money to support the families of striking National Union of Mineworkers members.
Although the Union seems embarrassed to receive their support, the activists are not deterred. Identifying a mining village in deepest Wales, the activists set off in a minibus to make their donation in person, resulting in two seemingly alien communities forming a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership.
Pride, starring Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, and Ben Schnetzer, will be presented at the Main Library at 5:30pm. The film is rated R and has a running time of just under two hours.
