Juneteenth is a federal holiday celebrating the emancipation of the enslaved people over 160 years ago. While the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and went into effect January 1, 1863, it wasn’t until two years later—on June 19, 1865—that the news reached the state of Texas.
Celebrate Juneteenth at the Edison Public Library and learn what took so long and more with Historical Performer Dr. Daisy Century, and find out what happened in those two years.
Century’s The History of Juneteenth program, taking place at the Clara Barton Branch on Monday, June 23, will focus on the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Watch Night, Galveston, Opal Lee, the Juneteenth flag, and present day celebrations throughout the United States through songs, poetry, and posters.
