Travel back in time and discover the vast history of the New York Elevated Subway Lines through vivid photographs on Wednesday, July 9. Join photographer and tour guide Oscar Israelowitz at 6:00pm for a virtual program featuring stops in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.
Start your journey with Israelowitz in Manhattan with the early lines above Second, Third, Sixth, and Ninth avenues and explore some of the historic sites along those routes, including the Castle Clinton National Historic Landmark, the Singer Sewing Machine Tower, and the Polo Grounds.
Moving on towards Brooklyn, Israelowitz will cover the lines that crossed the Brooklyn Bridge and passed the historic Green-Wood Cemetery, the Brighton Beach Hotel, and Coney Island and, in Queens, learn about the Els that made their way through Rockaway Beaches, Flushing Meadow Park (site of both the 1939 and 1963 World’s Fairs), and Kennedy Airport. The presentation will end in the Bronx, where the Els transported passengers to and from Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Zoo, Grand Concourse, Van Cortlandt Mansion and Park, and Wave Hill Mansion and Gardens.
Israelowitz, who holds degrees in geology and architecture, has exhibited photographic shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Historical Society, the New York Transit Museum, and the Main Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. He is also a licensed New York City Tour Guide.
