Celebrate our Summer Reading Program at a screening of 84 Charing Cross Road, a based-on-a-true-story film all about the joy of books, taking place at the Main Library on Monday, August 18, at 6:00pm.
This 1987 film, directed by David Hugh Jones and based on Helene Hanff’s 1970 book of the same name, centers around voracious reader Helene, who, unable to find the out-of-print titles she wants at a New York City bookstore, writes to a London-based secondhand bookstore in the hopes they can fill her order for a reasonable price.
Frank and the staff at Marks & Co., located at 84 Charing Cross Road, are able to provide Helene with what she wants. As time goes on, Helene provides the bookstore with standing orders, and her correspondence with Frank develops deeper, focusing on the happenings in their lives and in the world around them.
84 Charing Cross Road, which is rated PG, stars Anne Bancroft, Anthony Hopkins, and Judi Dench and has a running time of 1 hour and 40 minutes.
