Edison Public Library cardholders are invited to join acclaimed author Amanda Peters on Thursday, November 13, at 7:00pm for a conversation centered around her novel The Berry Pickers and her short fiction collection "Waiting for the Long Night Moon: Stories."

Influenced by Peters’ own heritage and set in 1962, The Berry Pickers follows the story of Mi’kmaq family from Nova Scotia who arrive in Maine to pick blueberries for the summer. Weeks later, four-year-old Ruthie, the family’s youngest child, vanishes, last seen by her six-year-old brother, Joe.

Growing up in Maine, Norma is the only child of an affluent family. Her father is emotionally distant, her mother frustratingly overprotective, and Norma is often troubled by recurring dreams and visions that seem more like memories than imagination. As she grows older, Norma slowly comes to realize there is something her parents aren’t telling her. Unwilling to abandon her intuition, she will spend decades trying to uncover this family secret.

The Berry Pickers, winner of the Barnes and Noble Discover Prize, the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, and the Dartmouth Book Award, among others, is an intimate portrait of race, love, loneliness, and the power of forgiveness and a riveting exploration of family, grief, and the bonds we share. Join us and Amanda Peters as we celebrate National Native American History Month. Register to be part of the conversation and to submit questions for the author.
