International Migrants Day is December 18, and we're recognizing it with a special screening of the 1983 film El Norte at the Main Library on Monday, December 22, at 5:30pm.
After their family is killed in a government massacre, siblings Enrique and Rosa flee Guatemala and embark on a perilous journey to ‘El Norte,’ i.e the United States. With help from friends and advice from a veteran immigrant, they make their way to Los Angeles where they find low-wage work and attempt to build new lives while navigating the perils of being undocumented in the United States.
El Norte was directed by Gregory Nava and stars Zaide Silvia Gutiérrez, David Villalpando and Ernesto Gómez Cruz. The film, which is presented in English and Spanish with English Subtitles, is rated R and has a running time of 2 hours, 21 minutes.
