Edison School District to give Edison teens a place to grow into independent young adults.

Prior to joining Edison Public Library, Caroline was the Senior Teen Services Librarian in the Ocean County Library System. In addition to programming and managing the Young Adult collections, Caroline supervised teen volunteers, and worked with the School District’s media specialists, literacy teachers, and NHS advisors.

In her spare time, you can find Caroline spoiling her Terrier-Chow rescue Lizzie, reading debut YA and middle grade authors, and finding new bakeries to critique.

Summer is a great time to relax and to read for fun. Many studies indicate that summer’s less structured days can result in a loss of the learning progress children make during the school year. “Summer slide” in early readers can be alleviated by setting time aside to practice reading.

This summer, Edison Public Library has a Reading Buddies program for children entering kindergarten through 3rd grade. How does it work? A young reader is paired with a teen volunteer for 30 minutes of reading aloud, once a week for four weeks in July or August.

Buddies pick out a book or two to read, find a spot in the library, and read together. There’s also a rumor that coloring sheets may be involved. Books read during a Reading Buddies session count towards the Children’s Summer Reading Challenge – just remember to enter them before
leaving!

Our teen volunteers are excited to help children practice their reading skills this summer. So, if your child will be entering grades K to 3 in September, register them for Reading Buddies at one of our branches.

The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) will make its return to Edison Public Library on Tuesday, September 13th at the North Edison branch. What is TAB? Good question. TAB is a volunteer group of teens that offers suggestions and provides input to the Teen Services Librarian about teens’ interests, including reading, recreational activities, and programming. It’s speaking up not
only for themselves but for the interests of teens who are not visiting the library (and don’t know what they’re missing!).

TL;DR : teens get to tell the adults what to do and how to do it - no guarantees though.

If you are between the ages of 14 and 18, have ideas you’re burning to share, or better yet, want to collaboratively evaluate ideas and projects that can positively impact the services that the Edison Public Library offers to its community, then register for the September TAB meeting once it’s posted to the Library’s online calendar of events.
