Summer is a great time to relax and to read for fun. Many studies indicate that summer’s less structured days can result in a loss of the learning progress children make during the school year. “Summer slide” in early readers can be alleviated by setting time aside to practice reading. This summer, Edison Public Library has a Reading Buddies program for children entering kindergarten through 3rd grade. How does it work? A young reader is paired with a teen volunteer for 30 minutes of reading aloud, once a week for four weeks in July or August. Buddies pick out a book or two to read, find a spot in the library, and read together. There’s also a rumor that coloring sheets may be involved. Books read during a Reading Buddies session count towards the Children’s Summer Reading Challenge – just remember to enter them before leaving! Our teen volunteers are excited to help children practice their reading skills this summer. So, if your child will be entering grades K to 3 in September, register them for Reading Buddies at one of our branches.
