Happy NaNoWriMo, writers! For those who don’t know, November is National Novel Writing Month, a time when writers work hard to complete a novel with a minimum of 50,000 words in a mere 30 days. Writing a novel can be stressful at the best of times, but putting a ticking clock on it just multiplies that burden. That’s why we want to remind you that the Edison Public Library is here for you. And in fact, we’d like to offer a few tips to get you to that 50k mark.
- Try the Pomodoro method: Set a timer for 25 minutes. Write for the entirety of that time. Ignore the urge to do anything else like check your email, get a snack, or go to the bathroom. At the end of the time, rest for 5 minutes (and do all those things you had the urge to do. Repeat as necessary to hit your 1,667 words for the day.
- Find a quiet place: Noisy, busy places can disrupt the creative flow. Sure, you can listen to music to tune out the noise, but sometimes that can be distracting as well. The Edison Public Library offers quiet study space which can be ideal for writers looking to hit their daily word goal.
- Reward yourself: Just like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the promise of a reward can entice our brains to push through hard tasks. So when you’ve hit your word count goal, stop for a reward. Watch an episode of your favorite show or have a small, sugary snack. And bonus: the Edison Public Library has vending machines, so even if you forget to bring a reward with you, you won’t be denied that sweet treat.
So if you’re taking part in NaNoWriMo to write a novel, or you’re slowly chipping away at your work in progress, the library is here to help. We’ve also curated a few books below to spur your productivity or stoke the creative flame.
