The Teen Short Story Writing Contest is still ongoing! In support of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), the Edison Public Library Teen Advisory Board is hosting the contest and encouraging Edison teens aged 11-18 to submit their stories. The deadline for submissions is November 30 at 5pm, so the clock is ticking if your teen is interested?

You’re probably saying “But writing is so hard!” And you’re right—it is hard. However, just like everything else, writing becomes easier the more you do it. And with that repetition, the better you become at it. Writing every day gets you into the habit of writing when you need to, not just when you feel like it. This becomes a strong foundation for a career as a writer.

As we close in on the deadline for the short story contest (remember: submit those stories by 5pm on Wednesday!), we want to leave you with some more advice. Colby Sharp (The Commonsense Guide to Your Classroom Library) and Pablo Cartaya (The Last Beekeeper) explain this advice well in their video recorded for participants of the Young Writers Program

There’s also a short interview with Jacqueline Resnick (The Daring Escape of the Misfit Menagerie) in which she discusses her process for keeping readers interested in a story.

Learn more about Colby Sharp, Pablo Cartaya, and Jacqueline Resnick.
Interested teens can pick up a flyer, Tips for Short Story Writing from NaNoWriMo’s Young Writers Program, at any Edison Public Library branch.

Masks will continue to be a welcome option for anyone who wants
